At this altitude, the mountain pine dominates. The pioneer plant grows to a maximum height of 20 to 25 metres and is usually only 20 to 35 centimetres thick. Mountain pines can be found in the Albula Valley on very permeable scree slopes on shady slopes together with alpine roses and in rocky, rather sunny locations together with lots of heather herbs.
