Castle
Belfort Castle Ruins
Description
The fortress serves as a new, noble ancestral seat for the Barons of Vaz. This aristocratic family eventually became more and more powerful, even competing with the bishops of Chur. And soon the Barons of Vaz expanded their new castle: the south wing was extended and a large, representative rectangular hall was added. The Vazers resided at Belfort for a good century, then the noble line died out. The castle now passed through Habsburg Austria via detours – and was destroyed by the Grisons in 1499. Today, new life thrives in the ruins, which are located on the Brienz/Brienzauls cultural trail: various herbs grow in a carefully tended garden. The garden and the castle can be discovered on guided excursions or on your own.
